- Blood Tests
- Liver Function Tests: These tests measure levels of liver enzymes and bilirubin in the blood, which can indicate liver or bile duct problems.
- Tumor Markers: Elevated levels of certain substances, like CA 19-9, may suggest bile duct cancer, though these markers are not specific and can be elevated in other conditions.
- Imaging Tests
- Ultrasound: This is often the first imaging test used to look at the liver and bile ducts.
- CT Scan (Computed Tomography): Provides detailed cross-sectional images of the bile ducts and surrounding structures.
- MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging): Particularly MRCP (Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography), which produces detailed images of the bile ducts.
- ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography): A procedure that uses an endoscope and X-rays to visualize the bile ducts and can also be used to take biopsies.
