- Symptom Evaluation: The initial step usually involves discussing symptoms with a healthcare provider. Common symptoms of colon cancer include changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, abdominal pain, weight loss, and fatigue.
- Physical Exam: A doctor may perform a physical exam, including a digital rectal exam (DRE), to check for abnormalities in the lower rectum.
- Blood Tests: While blood tests alone cannot diagnose colon cancer, they can help assess overall health and detect anemia or other related conditions.
- Colonoscopy: This is a key diagnostic tool. A long, flexible tube with a camera at the end is used to view the entire colon and rectum. If suspicious areas are found, the doctor can take biopsies during the procedure for further analysis.
- Imaging Tests: Imaging studies such as CT scans, MRI, or PET scans may be used to get detailed pictures of the inside of the body, which can help in identifying tumors or the extent of the disease.
