- Patient History and Physical Examination: The initial assessment includes a detailed review of the patient's medical history, symptoms, exposure to risk factors (like smoking or occupational hazards), and a physical exam.
- Imaging Tests:
- Chest X-ray: Often the first test, the X-ray shows masses or spots on the lungs.
- Computed Tomography (CT) Scan: This provides a more detailed cross-sectional image of the body than X-rays, better at showing the size, shape, and position of lung tumors and determining whether the cancer has spread.
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Scan: Used to look at the brain and spinal cord when metastasis is suspected.
- Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan: Often combined with a CT scan (PET/CT), this helps to determine whether the lung tumor is actively growing and whether cancer has spread to other parts of the body.
- Biopsy: A biopsy is the only definitive way to diagnose lung cancer. Tissue or fluid from the lung is collected and examined under a microscope for cancer cells. Methods of biopsy include:
- Bronchoscopy: A tube is inserted through the mouth or nose into the lungs to collect cells.
- Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA): A long, thin needle is passed through the chest wall to obtain tissue from the lung.
- Thoracentesis: Fluid from around the lungs is extracted and tested if there is a pleural effusion (fluid build-up).
- Thoracoscopy (VATS): Surgery is rarely performed for diagnostic purposes unless other methods can’t obtain a good sample.
- Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS): This procedure uses ultrasound along with a bronchoscope to obtain samples from lymph nodes or other structures not on the bronchial path but close to the lungs.
- Laboratory Tests: These include examining biopsy samples and might also involve blood tests to evaluate overall health and organ function, which can help in planning treatment.
- Molecular Testing: Tests to identify specific genes, proteins, and other factors unique to the tumor. These tests can help predict whether certain treatments will be effective and guide the choice of targeted therapies.
