Medulloblastoma Diagnosis

Medulloblastoma is a type of brain tumor that primarily affects children, although it can occur in adults as well. Medulloblastomas are considered malignant and aggressive, often spreading to other parts of the brain and spinal cord. Diagnosing medulloblastoma often includes a combination of modalities:

  • Physical Examination: A neurological exam is conducted to check for signs of brain and nervous system dysfunction.
  • Imaging Studies:
    • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging): The primary imaging method used to visualize the brain and spinal cord. MRI can detect the presence, size, and location of the tumor.
    • CT (Computed Tomography) Scan: Sometimes used in emergencies or when MRI is unavailable.
  • Lumbar Puncture (Spinal Tap):
    • This test is done to collect cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to check for the presence of cancer cells, indicating if the tumor has spread to the CSF.
  • Biopsy/Surgical Resection:
    • Biopsy: A tumor tissue sample is obtained through surgery or a needle biopsy to confirm the diagnosis.
  • Molecular and Genetic Testing:
    • These tests are done to identify specific genetic mutations or markers that can influence the prognosis and guide treatment decisions.
