Symptoms of neurofibromatosis depend on the type of NF and the location of tumors. Common symptoms include:
Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1)
- Café-au-lait spots (flat, light brown skin patches)
- Freckling in the armpits or groin
- Neurofibromas on or under the skin
- Learning disabilities or attention difficulties
- Bone abnormalities, including scoliosis
- Vision problems caused by optic pathway tumors
- Headaches
Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2)
- Hearing loss
- Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
- Balance difficulties
- Facial weakness or numbness
- Vision changes
- Headaches
Schwannomatosis
- Chronic pain, often severe
- Numbness or tingling
- Muscle weakness
- Loss of muscle function in affected areas
