Sinus Cancer Treatment

Treatment for sinus cancer (also known as paranasal sinus cancer) typically involves a combination of surgery, radiation therapy, and sometimes chemotherapy. The specific treatment plan depends on several factors, including the type and stage of cancer, the location and size of the tumor, and the patient's overall health. Here is an overview of common treatments:

  • Surgery
    • Endoscopic Surgery: Minimally invasive surgery performed through the nasal passages using an endoscope.
    • Open Surgery: Involves making incisions in the face or mouth to remove the tumor.
    • Neck Dissection: Removal of lymph nodes if cancer has spread to the neck.
  • Radiation Therapy
    • External Beam Radiation Therapy: Uses high-energy beams to target and destroy cancer cells.
    • Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT): A more precise form of radiation therapy that targets the tumor while sparing surrounding healthy tissue.

  • Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy drugs are designed to target and kill cells that grow and divide rapidly, which is a characteristic of cancer cells. However, this also affects some normal cells that divide quickly, such as those in the hair follicles, bone marrow, and digestive tract.
    • Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy: Administered before surgery to shrink the tumor.
    • Adjuvant Chemotherapy: Given after surgery to eliminate any remaining cancer cells.
    • Concurrent Chemoradiotherapy: Chemotherapy combined with radiation therapy enhances both treatments' effectiveness.
  • Targeted Therapy: Targeted therapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses drugs or other substances to precisely identify and attack cancer cells, usually by focusing on specific molecules involved in the growth, progression, and spread of cancer. This approach differs from traditional chemotherapy, which generally attacks all rapidly dividing cells, both cancerous and normal.
  • Immunotherapy: Cancer cells can sometimes evade the immune system by disguising themselves or suppressing immune responses. Immunotherapy boosts or manipulates the immune system to recognize and destroy cancer cells more effectively.  
  • Checkpoint Inhibitors: Drugs that help the immune system recognize and attack cancer cells.
  • Palliative Care
    • Pain Management: Medications and other techniques to manage pain.
    • Nutritional Support: Assistance with maintaining adequate nutrition during treatment.
    • Rehabilitation: Therapy to help with recovery of function and quality of life after treatment.
  • Clinical Trials: Participation in clinical trials to access new and experimental treatments.
