- Surgical Biopsy: In some cases, a surgical procedure (such as a mediastinoscopy or thoracoscopy) may be necessary to obtain a larger tissue sample for a more accurate diagnosis.
- Histopathological Examination: A pathologist examines the biopsy sample under a microscope to determine whether the tumor is a thymoma or thymic carcinoma.
- Immunohistochemistry: Special staining techniques may be used to identify specific markers on the tumor cells, aiding in the differentiation between thymoma and thymic carcinoma.
- Laboratory Tests: Blood tests might be performed to look for markers associated with paraneoplastic syndromes, which can be related to thymic tumors.
- Pulmonary Function Tests: These tests may be conducted to assess the tumor's impact on lung function, especially if surgery is being considered.
