The Elevator Speech: Can diabetes medications improve outcomes for kidney cancer patients?

Could GLP-1 receptor agonists — widely used for diabetes and weight loss — also improve outcomes in kidney cancer patients?

In this research project, Sam Kwon, a third-year medical student at George Washington University, analyzed data from ~10,000 patients with renal cell carcinoma and type 2 diabetes. The findings were notable: patients on GLP-1 therapies experienced fewer postoperative complications, reduced kidney damage, fewer hospital readmissions, and nearly two years longer survival.

While further clinical trials are needed, this study highlights the potential of repurposing existing therapies to improve cancer outcomes. Advancing cancer care often comes from asking simple but important questions — and building on them to drive meaningful progress for patients.
