The Silent Drivers: Alcohol, Tobacco, Sleep, and Stress

Some of the most significant cancer risks aren’t always the most visible. Tobacco use, alcohol consumption, poor sleep, and chronic stress all quietly contribute to long-term cancer risk.

Tobacco remains the leading preventable cause of cancer, linked not only to lung cancer but also to bladder, throat, and several other cancers. Quitting at any age significantly reduces risk.

“Smoking is still the single biggest driver of preventable cancer,” says Sora Ely, MD, thoracic surgeon at the GW Cancer Center. “And the benefits of quitting begin almost immediately.”

Alcohol is another often-overlooked risk. Even moderate consumption has been linked to multiple cancers, including liver and colorectal cancer. The relationship is dose-dependent: the less (or none), the better. 

Sleep and stress, while less discussed, are increasingly recognized as important factors. Poor sleep disrupts hormonal balance and immune function, while chronic stress can promote inflammation. "We're learning that reducing bodily stress, including sleeping well, also plays a role in cancer prevention," Ely notes.

Improving these areas doesn’t require drastic change. Better sleep habits, limiting alcohol, and finding healthy ways to cope with stress, such as exercise or social connection, can all reduce risk.

These “silent drivers” often go unnoticed, but addressing them can have a significant impact on long-term health.
