The GW Cancer Center's Urological Oncology Program is a comprehensive initiative dedicated to treating various urological cancers, including those of the male and female urinary tract, bladder, kidneys, adrenal glands, prostate, and testicles. This program stands out for its multidisciplinary, patient-centered team that combines advanced diagnosis and treatment options. We participate in many national cooperative group clinical trials to be able to offer promising novel treatments to our patients.
We employ leading-edge technologies in our treatment protocols, such as the da Vinci® robotic system for minimally-invasive surgeries and innovative diagnostic tools like the UroNav Fusion biopsy platform for transperineal prostate biopsy and Cysview® Blue Light Cystoscopy for improved cancer detection.
We offer specialized molecular testing and genomic analysis of urologic cancers to help determine the right treatment approach for each patient. These screenings include the Oncotype DX prostate cancer test, which predicts how aggressive your cancer will be, and the Decipher Prostate Genomic Classifier, which identifies the necessary treatments to avoid a recurrence or metastases (when cancer spreads to other organs or parts of the body). We also employ the CxBladder urine genomic testing to detect new and recurrent bladder cancer along with Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH).
The program also focuses on patient support, providing services such as fertility preservation consultations for men diagnosed with testicular cancer and genetic testing to tailor treatment plans to individual patients' needs. The center ensures a collaborative care environment where specialists from various disciplines work together to optimize treatment outcomes.
Research and Clinical Trials
Urological cancer research at the GW Cancer Center is a comprehensive initiative designed to investigate the various biological, genetic, and environmental factors contributing to urological cancers, develop new treatments, and enhance existing ones.
The Urological Cancer Program engages in significant research activities, including maintaining a tissue bank for future studies and offering clinical trials in partnership with:
- The Genitourinary Multidisciplinary D.C. Regional Oncology Project (GUMDROP) Clinical Trials for Genito-Urinary Cancer - GUMDROP (gumdroptrials.org)
- The National Cancer Institute (NCI)
- The National Institutes of Health (NIH)
- The Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG)
- The Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG)
- The National Radiation Oncology Group (NRG)
- Society of Urologic Oncology Clinical Trials Consortium (SUO-CTC)
