Prostate Cancer Screenings

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men and when detected early, it is highly treatable. Regular screenings can help identify prostate cancer before symptoms appear, improving treatment outcomes and survival rates.

Who Should Get Screened?

The American Cancer Society recommends that men discuss prostate cancer screening with their healthcare provider starting at:

  • Age 50 for men at average risk
  • Age 45 for men at higher risk (African American men and those with a family history of prostate cancer)
  • Age 40 for men at the highest risk (multiple first-degree relatives diagnosed at an early age)

What Does Screening Involve?

Prostate cancer screenings typically include:

  • Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Blood Test: Measures the level of PSA in the blood, which may be elevated in men with prostate cancer.
  • Digital Rectal Exam (DRE): A physician examines the prostate gland for abnormalities.
