Genetic counseling is a process that helps individuals and families understand and adapt to the medical, psychological, and familial implications of inherited cancer risk. Through the GW Cancer Center, patients have access to genetic counseling and testing services provided in partnership with trusted clinical providers.
These services are designed to support individuals who may be at increased risk for hereditary cancers by offering information, testing options, and personalized guidance based on their family history.
Genetic counseling is recommended if you have a personal or family history of the following cancers:
- Breast cancer
- Ovarian cancer
- Colorectal cancer (stomach, colon, rectal, or anal cancer)
- Uterine/endometrial cancer
- Prostate cancer
- Pancreatic cancer
- Kidney cancer
- Thyroid cancer
- Lung cancer in a non-smoker
The initial consultation typically includes:
- Take a detailed family history
- Discuss genetic testing options
- Review the types of results you can get from genetic testing
- Discuss how your genetic test results can impact your management as well as have implications for your family members.
