Your First Appointment

Cancer Center Buildings on the corner of I Street and 22nd Street

 

Your first visit will take place at the GW Medicval Faculty Associates (MFA) building, which is located at 2150 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington DC, 20037. The GW Cancer Center is located on the ground floor and can be best accessed at the corner of 22nd & I (Eye) Street, NW.

Please plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment. This will make sure that you have time to park or walk from nearby bus or train stations, as well as complete any necessary paperwork.

What to Bring to Your First Appointment

Please bring the following items with you during your first appointment:

  • Health Insurance Card
  • Government-issued photo ID
  • A list of your current medications, including over-the-counter medications, home remedies, herbal medications, and vitamins. We also want to know when you take the medication and how much you take.
  • You’re allowed to bring snacks or a beverage to have during the time at the clinic.
  • A sweater or coat. Our buildings are kept cool to protect medical equipment and ensure it functions properly.

What to Expect During Your First Visit

Check-In

During your first visit, you’ll meet your team of experts. Plan on being with us for at least ONE HOUR.

Please bring:

  • A support person (no children)
  • Insurance card
  • Pharmacy card (if applicable)
  • Co-pay (cash, check, or charge)
  • List of current medications
  • List of any questions you may have

Lab Work

You may have lab work done at the beginning of your visit. This will include a blood draw and a urine sample. Our on-site laboratory will run the tests that the doctor has requested so that the results can be reviewed during your appointment. Fasting instructions will be given prior to your first visit.

Consult

Your oncologist will review your medical history, provide education, and explain the process and care provided at the GW Cancer Center. During your first appointment, you will learn about:

  • Details of your diagnosis
  • Therapies and treatments
  • Potential side effects of therapies and treatments
  • Your individualized treatment plan

Your oncologist may also choose to send you to our nursing team to discuss your first day of treatment.
