At the GW Cancer Center, oncology social workers play an integral role in supporting patients, families, and caregivers as they navigate the complex journey of cancer diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. To schedule an appointment or to get more information about services, email jgelfarb [at] mfa [dot] gwu [dot] edu (Jessica Gelfarb), srichman [at] mfa [dot] gwu [dot] edu (Sara Richman), or Joslyn Trovati, or call 202-741-2582.
These professionals are specially trained to address the emotional, psychological, and social challenges that cancer can bring. Understanding that each patient’s experience is unique, oncology social workers provide personalized support that considers the entire scope of the patient’s life, including family dynamics, work responsibilities, financial concerns, and other personal challenges that may impact their well-being and treatment.
Our social workers can help you with:
- Understanding your emotions and ways to cope with a new diagnosis
- Helping you consider treatment options while taking into account work, family and other important life factors
- Managing changes to your relationships and families, including talking to your children about your diagnosis
- Serving as liaisons between you and your medical teams, helping to ensure patient and family goals are in line with treatment and your perspective and values are taken into account
- Helping you understand benefits that may be available through your job, including the Family and Medical Leave Act, short- and long-term disability as well as federal programs such as Social Security Disability and Medicare
In addition to emotional support, the GW Cancer Center social workers provide guidance in managing practical and logistical challenges. This can include helping you and your family navigate complex healthcare systems, connecting you with resources for financial assistance, and assisting with transportation and housing if you’re traveling long distances for treatment. They also offer information on local support groups and community resources, ensuring you and your loved ones have a network you can lean on. By easing the burden of logistical tasks, our social workers enable you and your family members and caregivers focus more fully on healing and wellness.
