Multiple Myeloma Treatment

Treatment for multiple myeloma depends on various factors including the stage of the disease, the patient's overall health, and any specific genetic characteristics of the cancer cells. Here are some common treatments:

  • Watchful Waiting: Watchful waiting may be an appropriate approach for patients with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) or asymptomatic (smoldering) myeloma. The patient is closely monitored with no active treatment.
  • Chemotherapy: This involves using drugs to kill fast-growing cancer cells. Chemotherapy is often a starting point for multiple myeloma treatment. GW Cancer Center offers the most advanced and up-to-date chemotherapy options.
  • Targeted Therapy: Targeted therapy focuses on specific molecules or pathways involved in the growth and spread of cancer cells. This approach involves identifying specific genetic mutations, proteins, or other molecules that are characteristic of cancer cells. Once these targets are identified, drugs or other substances can be designed to interfere with their function or activity.
  • Immunotherapy: Immunotherapy boosts or manipulates the immune system to recognize and destroy cancer cells more effectively. Cancer cells can sometimes evade the immune system by disguising themselves or suppressing immune responses. Immunotherapy aims to overcome these tactics.
  • Stem Cell Transplant: Stem cells are specialized cells in the blood or bone marrow that produce healthy plasma cells. Healthy blood-forming cells are collected from your own blood (autologous transplant) or from a donor (allogeneic transplant). The patient then undergoes high-dose chemotherapy to destroy any remaining cancer cells and then healthy stem cells are infused back into the patient’s bloodstream to help rebuild the bone marrow and restore blood cell production.
  • Radiation Therapy: Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells. It's often used to relieve pain from bone damage caused by multiple myeloma or to shrink tumors in specific areas.
  • Surgery: Surgery is not typically used to treat multiple myeloma, but it may sometimes be used to repair broken bones or remove a collection of abnormal plasma cells (plasmacytoma).
  • Clinical Trials: Clinical trials offer access to new treatments that are being tested to determine their effectiveness and safety. Participating in a clinical trial may give patients access to innovative treatments that aren't yet widely available.
