Ependymoma Diagnosis

  • Imaging Tests:
    • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging): This is the most common imaging test used to diagnose ependymomas. It provides detailed images of the brain and spinal cord and helps determine the location, size, and extent of the tumor.
    • CT (Computed Tomography) Scan: This diagnostic tool is sometimes used if MRI is not available, though MRI is preferred for better detail.
  • Biopsy: A sample of the tumor tissue is examined under a microscope to confirm the diagnosis and determine the exact type of ependymoma.
  • Lumbar Puncture (Spinal Tap): This procedure may be performed to collect cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to check for the presence of cancer cells.
  • Genetic and Molecular Testing: Testing the tumor for specific genetic mutations or molecular markers can provide information on the type of ependymoma and help guide treatment.
