Dr. Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen

The Katzen Cancer Research Center is the enduring legacy of Dr. Cyrus Katzen and his wife, Myrtle Katzen, whose generosity transformed cancer research and care at the George Washington University.

Their $10 million leadership gift — the largest individual gift in GW’s history at the time — established the Dr. Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen Cancer Research Center and significantly expanded GW’s ability to recruit leading scientists, launch innovative research programs, and enhance patient‑centered cancer care.

A Legacy Shaped by Personal Experience

The Katzen family’s commitment to cancer research was deeply personal. Dr. Katzen often reflected on the compassionate care his first wife, Sylvia, received at GW Hospital during her long battle with cancer. That experience reinforced the family’s belief in the importance of advancing both scientific discovery and clinical excellence.

Lifelong Ties to GW

Six members of the Katzen family attended GW, including four who earned medical degrees. Prior to the transformational $10 million gift, the family had already contributed more than $1.3 million to the university over many years, primarily in support of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences and cancer‑related initiatives.

Dr. Katzen, who passed away in 2009, was a Washington‑area businessman, inventor, and health professional. Together, Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen exemplified the transformative power of sustained philanthropy in advancing health, knowledge, and hope.
