10 Tips to Practice Self-Care During the Holiday Season

‘Tis the season for good tidings and joy, but the holidays are also a time for added stress. The to-do lists are longer, the invitations for parties and get-togethers start pouring in, and finding the perfect gift can be challenging. If you or a loved one is in active treatment for cancer, the holidays can be more overwhelming than usual.

Make sure to make yourself and your health the top priority. We have some suggestions to help keep your stress at a minimum and your holiday spirits lifted.

  • Set Boundaries: Prioritize your time and energy by saying no to activities or gatherings that may overwhelm you.
  • Practice Mindfulness: Spend a few minutes each day meditating, journaling, or simply being present in the moment.
  • Stick to Healthy Habits: Balance indulgent holiday treats with nutritious meals and regular physical activity.
  • Stay Hydrated: It’s important to stay hydrated when you’re well, and even more so during cancer treatment. Good hydration flushes toxins from the body and helps to reduce treatment side effects.
  • Schedule Downtime: Block off time for rest, relaxation, or a favorite hobby to recharge. You deserve it!
  • Get Regular Exercise: Engage in light physical activities such as walking, stretching, or yoga, as approved by your healthcare provider, to improve mood and maintain strength.
  • Connect with Loved Ones: Spend quality time with friends or family who bring you joy, whether in person or virtually.
  • Practice Gratitude: Reflect on what you're thankful for, which can improve mood and perspective during busy times. Be specific. Write down what you’re grateful for and read the list if you’re feeling down.
  • Get Enough Sleep: Aim for consistent sleep to maintain your energy and resilience.
  • Seek Support if Needed: If you feel overwhelmed or lonely, reach out to a trusted friend, family member, or professional.

The holiday season can be a time of joy and connection, but it can also bring unique challenges, especially when managing personal health or significant life events like a cancer diagnosis. By incorporating these self-care practices—setting boundaries, practicing mindfulness, maintaining healthy habits, and seeking support—you can create a more balanced and meaningful experience. Remember that prioritizing your well-being is not only essential for your physical health but also for your emotional resilience. With intentional effort and compassion for yourself, you can navigate the season with strength, gratitude, and moments of peace.
