GW Experts Are Available to Speak for Stories During Lung Cancer Awareness Month

WASHINGTON (Oct. 30, 2019) - November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month and according to the American Cancer Society, more than 220,000 new cases of lung cancer are diagnosed each year. The George Washington University (GW) Cancer Center has various experts available who can speak on topics such as lung cancer diagnosis, treatment, and symptom management, as well as the impacts of substance use on incidence of lung cancer.

Keith Mortman, MD, chief of Division of Thoracic Surgery at GW Hospital and associate professor of surgery at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences, is an expert in minimally invasive thoracic surgery. He is available to speak on lung cancer screening, prevention, and surgical treatment, as well as new imaging modalities, like virtual reality, used for surgical planning and patient education.

Robert Siegel, MD, associate center director for education and training at the GW Cancer Center and professor of medicine at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences, is a medical oncologist. He is available to speak on lung cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Gregory Trachiotis, MD, chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at GW Hospital and professor of surgery at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences, is an expert in video-assisted thoracic surgery. He is available to speak on lung health, lung cancer diagnosis, and surgical treatment.

Lorien Abroms, ScD, professor of prevention and community health at Milken Institute School of Public Health at GW, is an expert on mobile smoking cessation technology and developed the Text 2 Quit program. She is available to speak on smoking cessation and lung cancer prevention.

Carla Berg, PhD, MBA, associate center director for population sciences and policy at the GW Cancer Center and professor of prevention and community health at Milken Institute School of Public Health at GW, is an expert on socioeconomic factors related to substance use, like tobacco. She is available to speak on substance use and its impacts on lung cancer.

Debra Bernat, PhD, associate professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at Milken Institute School of Public Health at GW, is an expert on substance use and health disparities. She can speak on substance use and cancer prevention.

Tony Yang, ScD, LLM, MPH, executive director of the Center for Health Policy and Media Engagement and professor of policy, populations, and systems at GW School of Nursing, is an expert on the impacts of law and policy on health care delivery and population health outcomes.
