Media Advisory: GW to Formally Launch the GW Cancer Center with Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening Celebration

WASHINGTON (Dec. 5, 2016) - The George Washington University (GW) is pleased to formally launch the GW Cancer Center with a ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening celebration. The event will be held at the GW Cancer Center’s new lab and office space located on the eighth floor of the GW Science and Engineering Hall on Wed., Dec. 7 at 5:30 p.m. Speakers will include:

  • GW President Steven Knapp,
  • GW Cancer Center Director Eduardo Sotomayor, M.D.,
  • National Cancer Institute Acting Director Douglas R. Lowy, M.D., and
  • Friends of Cancer Research Chairperson and Founder Ellen V. Sigal, Ph.D.

The event will also include tours of the new cancer research labs out of the GW Cancer Center. Currently, seven labs occupy the space on the eighth floor, and when the floor is completely filled, the space will have 12 to 15 labs. The space also includes 19 offices, 60 workstations, and common and meeting areas. Research in the labs are focused on areas including cancer epigenetics and immunology and immunotherapy. The floor will house state-of-the-art equipment for molecular biology, biochemistry, and cell biology work, as well as a facility for a patient-derived xenograft model, a pre-clinical platform that will help predict the effectiveness of novel targeted agents for cancer patients.

The GW Cancer Center is a collaboration between GW Hospital, The GW Medical Faculty Associates, the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and the Milken Institute School of Public Health at GW, to expand GW’s efforts in the fight against cancer. The GW Cancer Center incorporates all existing cancer-related activities at GW, serving as a platform for future cancer services and research development. Being housed in the same building as researchers from the GW School of Engineering and Applied Sciences gives the GW Cancer Center a unique opportunity for partnerships to forge and identify novel approaches to address the burden of cancer.
