At the GW Cancer Center, we believe that prevention is the most powerful tool in the fight against cancer. That is the mission of our Cancer Preventorium, a pioneering program led by Dr. Elmer Huerta, a nationally recognized expert in cancer prevention and public health education.
Established in 1994, the Preventorium is designed for individuals who may not have symptoms but want to take proactive steps to reduce their cancer risk. Through early detection, education, and personalized guidance, we empower people to make informed decisions about their health before cancer develops.
Our Approach to Prevention
The Cancer Preventorium focuses on three essential areas:
- Cancer Screenings & Risk Assessment: We provide screenings for common cancers, including breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer, to aid in early detection and prevention.
- Health Education & Community Outreach: Elmer Huerta, MD, MPH is a highly regarded public health educator who shares critical cancer prevention information through community programs, public speaking, and his well-known Spanish-language media segments on CNN en Español.
- Patient Guidance & Support: Our team helps individuals navigate the healthcare system, providing clear explanations, answering questions, and connecting them with the resources they need to take charge of their health.
Elmer Huerta, MD, MPH, one of the few doctors specializing in preventative oncology in the country, is a leading voice in cancer prevention, with more than three decades of experience in medicine and public health.
